Attending court as a witness
If you have been asked to give evidence, the party that called you (the prosecution or defence) or the court will normally give you a date and a place to attend. This guide is general information only.
Before the day
- Keep any letters or witness summons safe and read them carefully.
- Tell whoever contacted you about any dates you cannot attend, or any needs you have (for example mobility, interpreter or childcare).
- You can usually ask whether you may be offered support. In many criminal cases the Witness Service, run by Citizens Advice, can offer a pre-trial visit to the court and support on the day. See the Witness Service.
On the day
Arrive in good time and expect security checks. You may be asked to wait in a separate witness waiting area. Do not discuss your evidence with other witnesses.
Giving evidence
You will be asked to take an oath or affirm. Listen to each question, answer only what is asked, and say if you do not understand or do not know. Some witnesses may be eligible for support such as giving evidence from behind a screen or by video link; the party who called you can tell you more.
Travel and expenses
You may be able to claim for reasonable expenses. Ask whoever called you about the process before you travel.
