Court reporting guide for journalists

For: Journalists. General information, not legal advice.

Accredited and freelance journalists have long reported on open courts. This is a general orientation, not legal advice. Contempt of court and defamation risks are real: when in doubt, take legal advice.

Reporting restrictions

Courts can impose restrictions on what may be published, and some apply automatically (for example, protecting the identity of complainants in sexual offence cases, and young people involved in proceedings). Check any restriction before publishing. Make sure you know what is in force at the time you report.

Hearing lists

HMCTS publishes hearing lists. They can change at short notice. Always check the official list on the day, and confirm details with the court listing office. This site links to the official list but does not copy it.

Remote observation

Some hearings can be observed remotely. Ask the court or the HMCTS media team about arrangements.

Fair and accurate reporting

Reporting should be fair, accurate and contemporaneous, and should not prejudice a trial. Our independence notice applies: we are not HMCTS and cannot give guidance on behalf of the courts.
