Supporting a family member at court

For: Family members. General information, not legal advice.

Supporting someone at court can help them a great deal. This guide covers the practical side.

Can I go in?

Most criminal hearings are open to the public, so you can usually sit in the public gallery. Some hearings (such as youth court hearings) are not public, and a judge or magistrates can restrict access. Check with the court if unsure.

Be ready for security

Everyone entering is searched and screened. Bring as little as possible. Leave sharp objects and anything that could be considered a weapon at home.

Hearings often run late

The listed time is when the court sits, not necessarily when a case is heard. Be prepared for a long wait. Mobile phones normally have to be silent and must not be used to record in court.

Finding the hearing

Hearing lists are published by HMCTS. See the official list link on each court page and our explainers for each list type.

Staying out of the way

If you are not a party or a witness, you will sit in the public gallery and are expected to stay quiet. Witnesses should not sit in court before they give evidence unless told they may.
