A guide for victims of crime attending court
If you are the victim of a crime you may be asked to attend court, either to give evidence or to follow the case. This is general information and not legal advice.
Support you can ask about
- Witness Service – often available at criminal courts, offering a visit before the hearing and a trained volunteer on the day. See the Witness Service.
- Police or Witness Care Unit – the officer in your case or the Witness Care Unit is usually your main contact for dates and updates.
- Special measures – in some cases you may be offered ways of giving evidence that feel safer, for example a screen or a video link. Ask the prosecution team or Witness Care.
Reporting restrictions
Victims of some offences have a lifelong right to anonymity. Publishing information that could identify them can be a criminal offence. This website never shows personal details of people in cases.
Looking after yourself
Court days are long and tiring. Bring water, a snack and something to help you pass the time. Tell staff if you need a break.
